George Smoot claimed (or someone in his behalf claimed) to have independently confirmed the John Mather COBE-FIRAS blackbody from Smoot’s own experiment. When these three intensities were plotted alongside John Mather’s data, there appeared to be a perfect corroboration (Figure IV-13).
How did they actually calculate the blackbody spectrum from the DMR instrument? I have not been able to determine the provenance of this investigation. I queried Smoot’s research group, but received no response.
We might logically assume that having obtained the power received by the Sum Channel, they converted it to the absolute intensity in the sky and then plotted all these intensities on the blackbody master diagram. But these intensities were certainly nowhere near the blackbody intensities. So where did Smoot obtain his blackbody corroboration from?
I have seen somewhere something to the effect that the spacecraft’s motion through space may be used to make some conclusions in this regard.
At any rate, we see from Figure IV-13 that Smoot’s three points hug the peak of the Big Bang blackbody spectrum most convincingly. One might then claim that even if John Mather’s findings were totally discounted, Smoot’s discovery would stand on its own - as a self-sufficient determination of both the skymap and its link to Big Bang.
We will come back to this point presently.
IV-3.7 COBE-DMR moon sweep
In Section IV-2.17 I have discussed how moon sweep experiment can confirm the presence or the absence of the blackbody spectrum in the sky. Since Smoot could measure the power received by each single antenna, he could sweep an antenna across the moon and record the received power.
Figure IV-14 shows the typical result of Smoot’s moon sweep experiment. See also the blow up of the key region of this figure in Figure IV-15(a).
As with FIRAS, we see neither hide nor hair of the blackbody spectrum – not in any of the frequency channels. Figure IV-13 (overleaf): The ubiquitous Big Bang blackbody Master Diagram:
In this diagram various researchers from various parts of the world working at various times with various instrumentations have put their mark, creating a picture-perfect composite spectrum that overlays perfectly on a mathematical 2.7 K blackbody spectrum. Smoot’s three data points (DMR) extend the trend towards lower frequencies after Mather’s close-packed data points (FIRAS) stop.
Figure IV-14 ( page 207): A typical result from COBE-DMR moon sweep, showing the sweep data compared with the ground antenna pattern. Had the blackbody radiation been present, the moon data would have flattened out away from the moon to a level substantially above the system noise floor. This and other diagrams like this provide definitive proof that the blackbody is absent.
